Abstract

95
The work revises the origins and development of documentary films in the 20s of the past century. It studies its relationships with the general history of film and the modernist avant-gardes, specially those related to the radical ideologies in Europe and the United States. The paper argues that the appearance of documentary involves the combination of already existing elements (photographic realism, narrative structure, and modernist fragmentation) along with a new emphasis on social persuasion. The subjetivism of the artistic avant-gardes and the radical shifts in political power promoted by marxist revolutionary ideologies also influenced documentary films.
