Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to analyze the prime time animated comedy, a television subgenre present in U.S. programming for more than 50 years, but still undefined. In order to fulfil the objectives of this paper, prime time animated comedy is explored using gender analysis, which includes the 108 programmes produced so far. The analysis reveals that the evolution and consolidation of the prime time animated comedy is the result of the television productions developed by Fox and cable television channels, as well as indicating that the programs belonging to this subgenre are characterized by the use of three transtextual strategies: parody, self- reflexivity and intertextuality.
