Abstract

116
The dates of composition of the comedy Cómo ha de ser el privado (1623-1624) and its revision (1628-1629) coincide with the period of the intense Anglo-Spanish diplomatic relations aimed at the rapprochement between Madrid and London through the marriage of the infant Maria and the Prince of Wales. The political approach to the play allows us to understand what position the author adopts towards the planned alliance with the Protestants in the context of the Thirty Years’ War. The application of the historical-critical method to the analysis of the comedy makes us possible to decipher certain allusions to the international political situation at that time, as well as to examine the masks strategy used by don Francisco to cover the identity of the characters.
