Immediate effects of x-irradiation on the intestinal absorption of glucose and radioprotection by cysteamine

Abstract
A study has been made of the immediate effect of X irradiation on the intestinal absorption of glucose (2.77 mM) in the rat, using the Sols and Ponz technique of successive absorptions with anesthetized animals.
Whit 1,200 r and 1,500 r, the absorption at 1, 3 and 5 hours after the irradiation is progressively inhibited with respect to the absorption before the irradiation.
Whit doses of 3,000 r, on the contrary, we have observed, after the sametimes, an increase in the absorption of glucose.
The presence of a solution of cysteamine (0.5 %) in the intestine during the irradiation prevents the appearance of disturbances in the absorption of glucose due to the radiations, the which reveals an efficacious radioprotection.
