Abstract

Procedures used earlier for the study of sialic acids from animal sera (2) have been employed for the isolation, identification and quantitative determination of sialic acids from serum, colostrum, milk, liver, brain and erythrocite of goats.

In all these materials the N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) has been found; the N-glycolylneuraminic acid (NGNA) has also been found, except in brain.

As it can be deduced from the hereby Table, the relation between the NANA concentration and the other sialic acids together vary from one product to another; these differences are particularly big in the case of the erythrocites. Furthermore, pluriacetylneuraminic acids have been detected in several of the abovementioned materials.

Finally, the percentages of the NGNA of serum and liver from young animals are, respectively, less than those of the adult animals; which is a confirmaron of previous observations.
