Este artículo sostiene que el papel de la fabricación se ha subordinado al del diseño en la arquitectura moderna temprana en Gran Bretaña. Se inspira en la imagen de Gottfried Semper del arquitecto en la antigüedad como coragus u orquestador de las muchas habilidades necesarias para crear un edificio y demuestra que el conocimiento de los materiales y la artesanía informaron el proceso de diseño. Sostiene que el papel del arquitecto como orquestador de la producción artesanal se ha pasado por alto debido al excesivo énfasis en el diseño conceptual. Se explora la relación entre los enfoques conceptual e intuitivo de la construcción, así como la comunicación entre el arquitecto y los artesanos a través de modelos y dibujos de trabajo a gran escala. Se señalan las preocupaciones no arquitectónicas de los artistas plásticos que participan en la producción arquitectónica. Por último, se demuestra que las tendencias historiográficas a la atribución estilística y biográfica militan en contra de una visión holística del diseño y la artesanía en la arquitectura moderna temprana.
