Obesity is a major health problem in modern society. lt causes excess morbidity and mortality. The health risks of obesity include hypertension, insulin resistence and diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, hypertriglyceridemia, low high density lipoprotein cholesterol and a tendency to develop thrombosis. There is an increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women and from colorectal cancer in men. The distribution of body fat is directly related to the cardiovascular risks. lt is believed that obesity is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, probably through its increased tendency toward thrombosis, the insulin resistence and (increased low density lipoprotein peroxidation).
