Abstract

146
Carranza studied the hypothesis of double justification on two separate occasions: once while participating in the council of Trent in 1546, and again towards the end of his life while imprisoned in Rome. His analysis on the subject would always be made from a catholic perspective since he was aware of the interpretation the Lutherans made of double justification. This means that the Tridentine theologians studied this Lutheran doctrine in depth and attempted to construct a catholic version. They were not successful. Carranza himself discarded that theological pathway of dialogue while still in Trent. However, only in Rome would he come to understand why double justification does not admit a catholic interpretation, not even as a theological hypothesis.
