Abstract

163
This article presents the Tractatus contra principales errores perfidi Machometi (1549) written by Cardinal Juan de Torquemada in an attempt to unite the Christian princes for a crusade against the Turk Mehmed II. After a biographical introduction and a brief exposition of the historical context, the author presents the structure of the work and the errors Torquemada condemns. Afterward, the author indicates the sources used by Torquemada to study the life and teaching of Mohammed. He also points out the pagan philosophers and Christian authors that Torquemada used to support his critic. Finally, he assesses the value of this cardinal’s contribution, centered mostly on philosophical and theological themes, to the anti-Islamic controversy.
