Abstract

126
The work of Paul Ricceur (recipient of the 2003 Paul VI International Prize) is a call for modernizing many forms of expounding Christian theology. His conception of hermeneutics allows for a link between the philological bent of Romantic hermeneutics with the ontological slant of existential hermeneutics. It offers a breath of realism in the communication and understanding of the meaning of things and of texts. His proposal with respect to the understanding and writing of History follows the same line of thinking. History is an intelligible narrative which at the same time explains the meaning of the course of events. This concept of history can provide a realist structure to the explanation of the History of the Church.
