Abstract

117
One of the classical debates in Catalan historiography of the 20th century is the division, first formulated by Jaume Vicens-Vives in the Thirties, between 'Romantic historiographers' and 'Scientifical historiographers'. Several historians took part in the debate that followed this dichotomy, like Ferran Soldevila, Antoni Rovira i Virgili, Ramon d'Abadal or Vicens-Vives himself. In the newspaper articles that these authors wrote regarding each other's theories, and in the core ideas in the monographic works they published, one could easily establish an initial classing of the intellectual and historiographical currents to which these authors belonged. In addition, this debate allows for the author to reflect on three conditions that in one way or another impinge on the work of the historian, namely: the influence of the political, cultural and intellectual context on which he finds himself immersed; the tendency towards a severe revision of the historiographical generation immediately previous to him; and finally, the influence of nationalism in the works of history.
