Thyroid function tests in birds with I-131 and effect of Veratrum album alkaloids (F. S. 73) on the results

Abstract
The study of the thyroid function as a productivity Iíndex in the animáis is of great interest.
We introduce in this paper some variations, in relation to the facts which exist in the bibliography.
The experiment is realized in control animáis (chickens) and in animáis treated with the S 73 fraction of the esters of Veratruvi álbum, which has hypotensor sedating and hypothermal properties; this last property utilized by G. Varela and colaborators in the treatment of high thermal stress.
Animáis who were used began to be treated from five days oíd during 45 days, in whose day twenty pe of I131 are inyected per Kg. of weight, sacrificing them at various intervals, collecting the thyroid and blood.
The radiactivo activities are plotted as (f) t. It is adjusted the graphic ; the equation is found, and the parameter b of assimilation of iodine by the thyroid, parameter a of iodine elimination, and parameter U of máximum uptake, are calculated.
It is observed that the maximun in the curves are reached after 28 hours in normal animáis and declines 50 % after 120hours. These two points are considered by us optimum in this exploration.
In those treated the máximum is reached between 14 to 16 hours, but the thyroid activity is lower, fact which justifies the hypothermal action pointed out previously.
