Influence of the adrenals on gastric secretion

Abstract

We studied, in cats with a «total pouch stomach», the in- fluence upon the gastric secretion induced by histamine by thesectioning of the lumbar splanchnic nerves, the denervation of the suprarenals and the bilateral adrenalectomy. To the ani­mals which survive and a constant gastric secretion is obtained we studied the action of 5 units of intravenous insuline.

In the animals with sectioned lumbar splanchnic nerves, his­ tamine induces an analogous gastric secretion of that produced in normal animals, even if this raise is preceded generally by an initial depression.

In the animáis upon which the denervation of the suprare­ nals on their superior pole was perfomed,, the infusión of his­ tamine produced a lethal effect on two of them and in the two that survived, the gastric secretion induced by histamine was very low, never similar to that which the same dosis of hista­ mine induces in normal animais.

In adrenalectomized animals, histamine produced a lethal effect on two of the three and in this last one, the secretion induced was much inferior to the control unless the dosis of histamine used were very high.

In other three animals the continous injection of histamine simultaneously with 0,9 % NaCl we avoived the lethal action of histamine, even if in one we could not obtain constant gastric secretion; in another in which after 120 mins of using both injection simultaneously we supressed the NaCl, the ani­ mal died after 40 mins. of the supression of the NaCl ; in the thrid animal to mainting his life we had to inject initially adre- naline and 0,9 % NaCl simultaneouslj’- during two hrs., after which time, we substituted the adrenaline by 8 «g/k/m his­ tamine and the animal segregated secretion analogous to that of the normal ones.

Insuline produced an inhibition of the secretion in all the surviving animals on which we had obtained constant gastric secretion.
