In vitro experiments on the capacity of serum iron transport using Fe-59 in various birds and mammals

Abstract
«In vitro» Experiments with Fe-59 on the Capacity of Serum Iron Transport in some Birds and Mammals
Tests on iron binding capacity of serum against an overload of S9Fe, have been complemented with the determination of serum iron (SI), total binding capacity (TIBC) and the latent capacity (UBIC). The experiments were made with sera from turkeys, ducks, chickens, rabbits, sheeps and pigs.
The binding capacity of the mammal sera coincides practically with the values that were expected. On the contrary, the binding capacity of bird sera, was higher than the calculated values in accordance with those of latent capacity.
The existence of an auxiliary mechanism of serum iron transport in birds, previously suggested, should explain the stated difference.
