These pages present a reflection on forgiveness from the standpoint of moral philosophy in order to explore its proper place in the juridical-institutional realm or in the realm of public life. Although forgiveness properly pertains to the sphere of gift and, therefore, surpasses the sphere of justice, it can however exercise an influence in the latter as a complement that protects it from possible deformations. Far from converting forgiveness into a unilateral act of the victim, this article underlines the relational character of forgiveness. Against the usual conception of forgiveness as a substitute for penalty or punishment, this article affirms the necessity to combine as best as possible the demands of justice and those of mercy as a way to completely restore peace.
