Abstract

133
Many moors were forcefully baptized during the popular revolts of 1520 and 1521 in Valencia. When order was restored, a committee of lawyers and theologians was convened in Madrid, which decided on April 4, 1525 that the baptisms were valid, even though the moors had been subject to duress. They had in mind a distinction, common at that time among lawyers, which differentiated between absolute and conditional coercion. A few days later, Fernando de Loazes, prosecutor for the Court of the Inquisition of Valencia also determined that the baptisms were valid, based on the same distinction.
