This article analyzes the relation between the transmission of the faith and enculturation of the faith on one hand and the role of catechisms on the other. The research begins with the petition of a «Little Catechism» («parvus catechismus») for the Universal Church, formulated during the first Vatican Council. The author goes on to examine the situation of catechesis up until Vatican n, and the petition of the «Universal Catechism» during the postconcilium, especially in the Extraordinary Synod of 1985. The publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and, recently, of its Compendium, lead us to rethink the necessity of mediations in catechesis.
