Abstract

100
The fervor of the Immaculate Conception devotion prevalent in Spain during the 16th–18th centuries was also present in other non-Marian fraternities. In many cases, these fraternities did not only foster the devotion to the Immaculate Conception, but also explicitly defended it and worked for its solemn recognition by the Holy See. The first Castillian fraternity of this type was founded by Fernando III in 1250 and the Aragonese and Catalonian counterparts date back to mid-14th century. It boomed in the 16th century, attaining its splendor in the 17th century, with the special support of the Spanish Bourbons.
