Bartholomew Carranza received his education in the setting of the Spanish reform which preceded the reform of the Council of Trent by several decades. He was an exemplary Spanish Dominican who was very dedicated to his studies. After being invited to the Council by Emperor Charles V, Carranza prepared a series of theological works which favored the atmosphere of reform, defending as centerpiece of the reform the duty of the bishops to reside in their dioceses.
