Abstract

172
Latin-American intellectuals, after justifying theologically the Insurgence (defeating the qualms of their conscience caused by «owed obedience») confronted a few theological issues of unquestionable interest: the authority of the pope to approve or disapprove American independence; the Roman Pontiff’s jurisdiction in naming Latin-American bishops; the reallocation of royal patronage by the new republican authority; the question of religious tolerance; criticism of European liberal authors and the debate on mitigated millennialism.
