Abstract

347
This article presents a study on the way that NATO, in its role as a functional security organization, exerts smart power, i.e. the successful combination of soft power and hard power strategies. To do this, we analyze, first, the relative weight that coercive and inductive actions, as well as activities of attraction, have on NATO operations, and second, the policy framework established the NATO Strategic Concept 2010. The analysis concludes that NATO exerts its influence by combining all dimensions of hard and soft powers, although integrating them in an unbalanced way. In fact, the coercive activities in nature play the greatest role and add value to the Alliance’s contribution to global peace and security.
