This article assesses how Georges Scelles' doctrinal legacy to international law should be understood. His failed claim that the individual is a subject of international law questioned the ultimate foundations of classical international law. In his legacy, however, one can identify at the same time elements of a pure theory, a utopia and a realistic legal doctrine.
