The aim of this paper is to analyse the reasons behind the introduction and final wording of Article 50 TEU, in order to shed light on the doubts raised by its current application, once it was formally invoked by the United Kingdom on 29 March 2017. To this end, the paper first analyses the proposals received by the Convention on the Future of Europe, which was to draft the Constitutional Treaty. Secondly, it studies the drafting proposals for the aforementioned article formulated by the Convention, and the amendments they received. Finally, the introduction of the withdrawal clause in the Lisbon Treaty is analysed.
