Por qué interesan las noticias: una aproximación a los fundamentos del interés informativo

Cabría afirmar que el interés informativo es como una especie de piedra filosofal que, desde siempre, han buscado afanosamente los medios de comunicación. Todo lo que se toca con ella se convierte en dinero. Las ventas de productos periodísticos o de espacios publicitarios dependen principalmente del interés; de ahí que sea preciso buscar lo que más interesa al público, porque eso es lo que más beneficios económicos o ideológicos reporta.
Esto es tan evidente que, en una profesión como la periodística, no muy dada a los consensos, parece que hay un acuerdo unánime en señalar que el interés informativo ocupa un lugar privilegiado en ella, hasta el punto de que se lo considera uno de los principales criterios de selección. De ahí que se suela sostener implícitamente el principio de que "sólo lo que sea de interés general debe ser publicado". Y, sin embargo, por paradójico que resulte, la investigación científica sobre el tema está todavía en sus comienzos.
