Abstract
Sin embargo, y salvando la paradoja, quizá sea difícil encontrar algo más falso que esta afirmación. Afirmación que, por otra parte, reproduce de manera extraordinariamente fiel la estructura característica de lo que solemos llamar rumor: es anónima, segura, breve, tajante e irrebatible, No es posible hallar un argumento definitivo que demuestre la falsedad de una proposición que comience con un "se dice". Porque, ¿quién es el que dice? Siempre será posible apelar a un personaje en la sombra al que atribuir la autoría del dicho.
Ahora bien, si nos atenemos al contenido, esto es, a la sentencia que declara la falsedad universal de los rumores, parece más sencillo presentar un recurso para refutarlo. Basta pensar, por un momento, en la multitud de rumores que han sido confirmados por la realidad. Es suficiente con recordar uno, que, aunque lejano en el tiempo, es bien conocido. Comenzó a circular en enero de 1973 que el presidente francés, Georges Pompidou, sufría una grave dolencia. Tanto en los ambientes políticos del partido gobernante como en los de la oposición, la noticia se difundió con gran rapidez a pesar de no haber recibido confirmación oficial. No era para menos, puesto que de ser cierta anticipaba que los siete anos de gobierno presidencial no llegarían a su término. Desgraciadamente para el presidente, así sucedió en efecto: un ano después del nacimiento del rumor Pompidou fallecía a causa de una terrible enfermedad.
Tan trágica predicción nos invita a sospechar, de momento, que la habitual concepción de los rumores como un fenómeno negativo, fantástico e irracional pudiera no ser la más correcta. Cabe preguntarse, por tanto, si, lejos de revelarse como un misterio, los rumores no obedecen a una lógica cuyos mecanismos merezca la pena intentar descubrir.
