Abstract

1601
As part of the study of Roman public architecture, this paper aims to present a review of the role of the colour as a symbol and means of transmitting ideas, either through the use of coloured marble or with the application of painting to the official buildings. Since Ancient Times, colour has been a key factor in social codes of all cultures and civilizations. Full of meaning in the collective memory, we can consider it as an effective instrument to express thoughts within the visual discourse (Sánchez, 2012: 192). Its high representative level, inescapably linked to the official Roman architecture, makes it necessary to dive deeper in the study of its use and significance, and thus we will have a clearer and broader view of the ideology of this Period.
