Study of the gastrointestinal motility of the chicken using phenol red

Abstract
Gastrointestinal motility of 24-hour-old chickens has been measured by means of Phenol red injected ín the esophagus. The dye has been used as gastrointestinal transit tracer for lags of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 hours.
The results show that the esophagus-crop, muscular stomach, ileum and rectum with caeca are the segments in which the main digestive process is performed, the remaining segments being involved in conduction between those formerly cited.
