Abstract

1710
It is well known that Max Scheler starts his moral thinking by elaborating a theory of values. However, his teachings on ethics culminate in a doctrine of following the example of morally exemplary people, all of which had a direct influence on the moral theology of Fritz Tillmann. In this article, Scheler’s theory of emulation is illustrated, and the connection between this result and the starting point is shown. In light of this, values are revealed as a necesary prerequisite for emulation. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of this approach are assessed.
