Abstract

67
Analysis of the use of the word σύνδϵw together with its derivatives emphasizes the originality of the works of Gregory of Nyssa, who uses that terminology to indicate basic theological truths, such as the Christ’s Cross (σύνδϵσμoϨ) and the Holy Spirit (σύνδϵϮɩkóϨ). He recognizes the divine intimacy as the source of all unity and harmony; these are no longer taken as mere fruit of natural necessity, as in the scheme of Plato, to whose works St. Gregory clearly refers; rather the possibility of humanascent is preceded by and based on the free descendent movement of God.
