Abstract

62
There are abundant historical and cultural reasons that hinder the relationship between religion and psychiatry. Sometimes religion is talked of as a factor of personal and social destabilization, but at the same time there is abundant research that that shows how religion fosters human health. Everyone benefits from the dialogue between the two spheres, beginning with the patients. As the subtitle indicates, this text explores some ways to improve the understanding between religion and psychiatry, even though we do not claim to provide a systematic approach. Firstly, the point of view of a non-Christian North American psychiatrist is presented. Then a particular debate between specialists from diverse religious and intellectual traditions is outlined. Finally, a psychiatrist who is a Catholic priest gives a deeper analysis of the Christian perspective.
