Abstract

1082
Fernando Savater is one of the influential thinkers in Spain today. His Ética para Amador has been translated into over 25 languages. His work El valor de elegir, which he considers to be «the essential nucleus of all I have written», will be judged in this article. Savater’s work has two parts. The first is an anthropological analysis of freedom as the capacity to choose. The second proposes some «recommended choices». The author of this article, after exposing the content of the book, attempts at entering into dialogue with Savater, highlighting areas in which he is lacking: 1. His proposal of atheism and his defence against God and religion. 2. His tendency towards materialism in anthropology. 3. The insufficiency of his analysis of freedom. 4. Certain sophisms as regards to the words «relative » and «absolute» in terms such as good, bad and truth. 5. His choice of hedonism.
