Abstract

684
After underlining the paradigmatic nature of the Encyclical Rerum Novarum within the modern social doctrine of the Church, the author examines the stage of difficulties that began in the 1950s and prolonged itself in the Post-Conciliar period. Two theological projects are involved in this crisis period: the project by J. R. Metz and certain Latin American liberation theologies. In the magisterium of John Paul II, the validity and meaning of the social doctrine is newly affirmed while definig its theological nature and there by overcoming errors arising from its consideration within the sphere of the so-called «Christian Philosophy». This allows us to situate the social doctrine of the Church in clear connection. with the genuine sources of theology and to affirm its universality, which derives from the universality of Redemption. Finally, the autor affirms the utopian-positive nature of the social doctrine and considers its correct relation with the social sciences.
