Abstract

105
When the author of the fourth Gospel states that the disciples did not understand some of the the deeds and sayings of the Master until after Pentecost (ef Jn 14:26; 15:26; 16:13-14), he gives the key without which one cannot understand the Johannine question, even as regards authenticity and historicity. It is the Holy Spirit who will not only remind them of what has taken place, but also enable them to understand its deeper meaning. The Lord's words after the Pasehal events also gain new, rieher perspectives. Written after many years of being preached and meditated upon, they acquire new meaning, even their true meaning, for which at first the disciples were not sufficiently prepared to understand.

Moreover, one should remember that the concept of authenticity and historicity differs from that which is held nowadays, although not to the extent that one can deny the Johannine paternity of the fourth Gospel, whieh Tradition attributes to him, and as is vouched for by internal analysis of the book. At the same time, the theological and kerygmatic purpose of the hagiographer (ef Jn 20:31) is no obstacle to accepting the historical veracity of the facts referred to.
