THE VOCATION OF MAN IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the Old Testament, we read of God's initiatives in summoning man to a fuller existence, to the Covenant and to eternal life. The sacred books therefore, serve as the fundamental document in ascertaining the origin and in finding out the statute of man's vocation.
This vocation is brought about and is understood in relation to the history of Israel, the chosen people par excellence. But it is especially shown in the life of men like Adam, Abraham, Moses and David, who for this reason are called by the author «exemplary vocations».
The powerful initiative of God and the liberty of man who ought to accept the call are reflected in a singular way in the vocation of Israel's prophets. The divine call of these men, people who have reformed and brought to its peak the religion of the Chosen People, is so important in Holy Scripture that it gave rise to a proper literary genre, the so called «vocation stories».
The theme of vocation is described in the Old Testament, so to speak, from God's as well as from man's point of view. It therefore contains the nucleus for a correct anthropology. The present study concludes with the biblical theme of the Remnant, that historical and spiritual climax of Israel 's vocation which served as the bridge or bond of the Old Testament to the New Testament.
