Abstract

171
My paper focuses on Buytendijk’s ordering of experiences of affliction, which is conceived of from the point of view of physical pain. This classification of suffering into four different kinds allows a critical distance from Scheler’s reductive view of physical pain as an affective state, almost amorphous, which only reaches the ego in a mediated form. The internal links between these four kinds of suffering distinguished by Buytendijk support García-Baró’s conceptual determination of pain as the experience of negation as such.
