Journalists' Professional Attitudes in a Global Context

Abstract

This article traces the author’s interest in studying journalists’ professional attitudes in the United States and other countries and reports on some of the main findings of these studies regarding journalists’ attitudes about their roles, the ethics of certain reporting methods, the importance of different aspects of their jobs, and their images of their audiences. The article concludes with recommendations for future cross-national re-search over time on journalists’ professional attitudes, including better specification of the factors influencing these attitudes as well as their impact on journalistic practices and actual news coverage.
