Abstract

182
Global media trends are increasingly raising important questions about the forces shaping press coverage, especially the "global journalists" themselves, their attitudes and their profession. To establish a systematic conceptual framework for examining these issues, the author proposes a Hierarchy of Influences model. The five levels of influence (individual, routines, organizational, extra-media, and ideological) are explained and illustrated using the concept of professionalism. Placing journalists within such a structural, "media sociological" context, helps identify crucial concepts and normative issues, facilitating the growing interest in comparative, cross-national research in this area.
