Abstract

54
The essay explores the different ways in which the practice of philological annotation is adversely affected by the institutional framework in which it is carried out. Basing himself on a close review of numerous editions of the Buscón, the author suggests that philologists often do not have a clear idea of the type of reader for whom they are annotating, which leads them to apply inconsistent criteria in their textual commentary. He proceeds to suggest strategies for making philological annotation more useful to its readers.
