Abstract

186
This article is intended to answer the still open questions regarding the title of Quevedo’s Marco Bruto (Marcus Brutus), the last political treatise which was published during his lifetime. There are substantial changes in the different reviews caused by bibliographical and textual vagueness: partial mutilation of the title page of some princeps copy, an inadequate delimitation of the information on the half title and title page, or the innovations introduced by the series editions of the 17th century. According to the detailed study of the kept copies of 1644 and 1645, which was set in a context of particular bibliographic circumstances regarding the author’s imprisonment and the loss of the second part of the book after his death, the sole genuine title endorsed by text transmission is Primera parte de la vida de Marco Bruto (First Part of the Life of Marcus Brutus). Thus it was printed, without any differences between editions and copies, in the two printings supervised by him before he died.
