La literatura nórdica antigua en la obra de Juan Andrés: valoración y fuentes

Following the expulsion of the Jesuit order from Spain in 1767, one priest, Juan Andrés y Morell, travelled to Italy, where he wrote one of the most famous books of the XVIII century, a sevenvolume history of the literatures of the whole world. Of the Origins and Progress of all Literatures (originally published in Italian) was a pioneering example in the field of comparative literature and a witness to the increasing importance of Nordic mediaeval literature in an European context. This work also contains the first appraisal in Spanish of the Eddas and Skaldic Poetry, two of the genres which Andrés called “Septentrional Literature”. The focus of this article is a discussion of his impressions and a brief analysis of the sources Andrés used in his chapter about the aforementioned works.
