Abstract

88
This work proposes to study the metatextual chapters in “Noticias del Imperio” (1987), Fernando del Paso’s novelistic version of the Mexican Second Empire. Although the central tension in the novel is rooted in the interaction between the “historical” chapters and Carlota’s monologues, there is a space in the novel for other versions, other voices, whose unavoidable textuality compels us to imagine an alternative discursive space. The narrators, regular people from both sides of the Atlantic, lead us to suggest that the presence of the fragment also implies a questioning of nationalist rhetoric, postulating in this way a vision by which cultural borders are erased and dialogue made possible.
