Abstract

274
In “The inexplicable Phenomenon” by Leopoldo Lugones, science (understood in the first place as empirical science) plays important roles at different levels of the discourse. In order to study the presence of science in the story, the polysemy of the word ‘science’ is discussed and its context of publication is presented –the journal “Philadelphia” and the book “Las fuerzas extrañas” (Strange Forces)–. With this in mind, a textual, analysis is carried out, which will enable us to appreciate the close relationship between science will have in the story narrated. However, this short story by Lugones is not a praise of science; on the contrary, it makes use of it in order to point out its limitations when faced with transcendental experiences.
