Abstract

75
In this article, prof. Coseriu deals with the characterisation of the prayer as a type of discourse, from the viewpoint of text linguistics. Prof. Coseriu explains some of the implications of his definition of prayer such as: 1) linguistic and extralinguistic (ethical) requirements. Regarding the elements in the prayer (speaker, listener, aim, context, and discourse itself); 2) limits and scope of the cognitive function of language in prayers, due to the fact that, in prayers, the realm of the “universe of discourse”, which provides spoken language with meaning, is explained. And 3) an analysis of the two versions of “Our Father”, according to Saint Luke and Saint Matthew, in which prof. Coseriu argues that Saint Matthew’s version is more faithful to the original text and to the ideal of prayer.
