Abstract

69
Fringe theatres were born in the 1980s due to the initiative of companies which, until then, had been performing in the street, parks and squares. They felt the need for greater stability but not at the expense of losing their special characteristics: clear differentiation with respect to commercial theatre and national theatre; prioritisation of theatre conceived as spectacle; risky programming and an appeal to a new audience. Also due to this need for differentiation, they chose novel spaces for performance (factories, warehouse, workshops). The initial enthusiasm and voluntary nature gives way to professionalism, with all of its great advantages along with some notable disadvantages.
