Abstract

66
In the Antiquity, stylistic heterogeneity was not considered a deficiency of a text; for, at the time, eloquence was synonym of the capacity to vary stylistic registers in accordance with the specific needs of the discourse. In this article, the concept of “Decoro”, pillar of the classic rhetorical tradition, is used as a method of analysis to make sense of the stylistic versatility of moderns essays in general. I will analyse the stylistic variety of the essay “Dos viejas discusiones” by the Mexican essayist Alfonso Reyes. The analysis confirms that the stylistic register is actively used by the author to cater for the specific persuasive aims at each level of the discourse.
