Abstract

89
Spanish drama during the Second Republic had two clearly-cut types of plays, those of a commercial kind, which were widely performed and received general acceptance, and another type -of differing ideologies- which searched formal and thematic renewal, either by means of avante-garde experimentation or by being associated with the best Spanish dramatic tradition, without neglecting the increasing importance which the so-called 'theatre of the masses' earned in its own right. In this context, Rafael Alberti's drama is introduced and gains importance, and is closely linked to his social commitments and poetry of protest, together with magazines such as Octubre, which included María Teresa León's play, Huelga en el Puerto, one of the best examples of 'proletarian drama' of the time.
