In March 1942, Gabriel Arias Salgado, Vice-Secretary of Popular Education, takes control of the Teatro Español in Madrid. He adopts various measures to improve a management he regards as anomalous. First of all, he removes part of the administration from the room of the National Delegation of Propaganda; he modifies the organization chart of the Government and appoints Cayetano Luca de Tena as director of the coliseum. Secondly, he improves the economic exploitation of the theatre. He makes possible the project of the Teatro Nacional del Español, although he cannot undergo the modernization of its facilities immediately, lightning specially. Finally, he subjects the repertory to strict ideological control and recovers the religious performances of the Corpus Christi.
