The semi-opera The Indian Queen (1695) by Henry Purcell, based on Howard and Dryden’s homonymous theatrical play (1664) constitutes an outstanding element in the discursive and axiologic differentiation that took place in Europe after the Discovery of the New World. In accordance with the theory and methodology provided by interpretative semantics, this work intends to demonstrate the thematic novelty and the long lasting influence of these operatic and dramatic pieces in the European literary and musical fields; in the Spanish letters, conversely, the diversification of discourses on America touched only incidentally the operatic discourse. From a dialogic point of view, and contrarily to the Spanish chronicles that inspired them, both English pieces give voice to indigenous characters exclusively and at the same time evaluate them positively.
