Pablo Neruda was a great reader of literary works in different languages. He knew North American Literature and he mentioned American writers in many phases of his own work. Literary criticism has not treated this issue in depth. This article reviews Neruda’s mentions of writers such as Edgard A. Poe, Norman Mailer, Theodore Dreiser, Thomas Wolfe, Richard Lockridge, OR Howard Fast. An exploration is made of the causes which motivate Neruda to include them in his poems and his prose of reflection. Mostly the reasons are aesthetic and ideological. The study shows the value that North American Literature acquires in the poetry of the Chilean author, as a point of reference of literary commitment. In addition, it provides a broad dimension of America in the poems of Neruda, an artist who rejects imperialism, but defends writers who use words to denounce.
