The Comedia de la invención de la sortija is a play performed in Monforte de Lemos in 1594 for the inauguration of the Jesuit College. In this piece music and dance play a paramount role by providing the desired atmosphere and helping to identify the different characters. Its early date and miscellaneous elements allow us to have a rare glimpse of the theatrical performances in Spain at a moment immediately preceding the great theatrical plays (comedy, entremés, auto sacramental) of the Spanish Baroque theater.
